Visiting London?

Knowing roughly where stations sit makes getting around much easier. A few rounds a day before your trip will teach you that Westminster is by the river, Camden Town is north of the centre and Canary Wharf is out east. You'll start to see how the tube connects the places you want to visit.

Tips

  • Use the River Thames to get your bearings: most of central London is just north of it.
  • Many station names are the names of the area around them, so look for them on the map.
  • Rounds get harder, from famous central stations to quiet stops at the end of the line.
  • Guesses within 100 metres score full marks. Rounds 3 to 5 count double or triple.

How the network fits together

London's stations belong to four networks that share one fare system. The Underground has 11 lines running through the centre and out to the suburbs. The London Overground loops around inner London, reaching areas like Hackney, Peckham and Crystal Palace. The DLR serves the old docks in the east, around Canary Wharf and the Royal Docks. The Elizabeth line crosses the city from Reading and Heathrow in the west to Shenfield and Abbey Wood in the east.

Most lines meet at a handful of big stations in the centre: King's Cross St. Pancras, Oxford Circus, Bank, Liverpool Street and Waterloo. If you can place those, you have a framework for everything else.

Learning the map, area by area

  • West End: Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and Covent Garden are packed within a short walk of each other.
  • The City: Bank, Moorgate, St. Paul's and Liverpool Street sit in London's financial district, east of the West End.
  • South Bank: Waterloo, Southwark and London Bridge line the south side of the river.
  • North: the Northern line splits at Camden Town, one branch to Edgware, the other to High Barnet and Mill Hill East.
  • East: Stratford, home of the Olympic Park, is a hub for the Central, Jubilee, Elizabeth, Overground and DLR.
  • West: the District and Piccadilly lines fan out towards Richmond, Ealing and Heathrow.

How scoring works

Each guess scores up to 100 points: full marks within 100 metres, falling evenly to zero at 30 miles. Rounds 3 to 5 are multiplied, so the best possible day is 1,000 points. Read the full how to play guide.

Vowels gives you one station with only its vowels showing. Closest shows a London landmark and asks which of three stations is nearest. Both take under a minute.
