Tube etiquette and tips: how to ride like a Londoner

Millions of journeys are made on London's trains every day. To keep it moving, Londoners follow a set of unwritten rules. Follow them and you'll blend straight in.

On the escalator

Stand on the right, walk on the left. This is the most famous tube rule, and people take it seriously. If you are standing with luggage or friends, keep to the right so others can pass. Hold the handrail and keep small children close.

At the gates

  • Have your card or phone ready before you reach the gate, not after.
  • Tap firmly on the yellow reader and wait for the gate to open.
  • If you have big luggage, use the wide gate.
  • Don't stop right after the gates. Move to the side to check your phone or map.

On the platform and train

  • Let people off before you get on.
  • Move right down inside the carriage, rather than standing by the doors.
  • Take your backpack off in busy trains and put it by your feet.
  • Offer your seat to anyone who needs it more. Some people wear a 'Baby on board' or 'Please offer me a seat' badge.
  • Keep phone calls and music quiet, and don't eat strong-smelling food.
  • Don't hold the doors. Another train is usually only a few minutes away.

Practical tips

  • Avoid the rush hours if you can. Mid-morning and early afternoon are much calmer.
  • In summer, some deep lines get very warm. Carry water.
  • Walking between close central stations is often quicker than changing trains.
  • Look at the front of the train for its destination, especially on lines with branches.
  • If you lose something, report it online to the lost property office.
  • Stand behind the yellow line on platforms, and mind the gap when boarding.

Talking to strangers

Londoners are friendlier than their reputation, but the tube is a quiet place, especially in the morning. A nod or smile is plenty. If you need directions, ask; most people are glad to help.
