How to play Vowels

Vowels is a quick daily word puzzle. You get one London station name with only its vowels showing. Every consonant is replaced by a gap, and your job is to fill the gaps as fast as you can. For example, a puzzle might look like _A__I__ _O_O__ ... and the answer would be a station whose vowels sit in exactly those places.

How to play

  • Tap any gap to choose it. The chosen gap gets an amber outline.
  • Type a letter on the keyboard. The outline jumps on to the next empty gap.
  • The vowels A, E, I, O and U are greyed out on the keyboard, because they are already in place and can't be changed.
  • Delete clears the chosen gap, or the letter before it if the gap is empty.
  • When every gap is filled, your answer is checked. A correct answer locks in and the clock stops.

Hints

Stuck? Tap Hint. If you haven't typed anything yet, a hint fills in one consonant. If you have typed some letters and one is wrong, the hint fixes a wrong letter for you. If everything you typed is right, it gives you a new letter instead.

Scoring and stats

Vowels is scored on time: the quicker you solve it, the better. Your profile keeps your solve times, how many hints you used and how many days you solved without a hint. If you give up, the answer is shown, but the day counts as unsolved.

Tips

  • Look at the length of each word. Short words are often 'Park', 'Road', 'Hill' or 'Cross'.
  • Common endings help: '-ton', '-ham', '-ford', '-wood' and '-well' appear in many London names.
  • Spaces and punctuation are shown, so you can tell how many words the name has.

Who can play

Vowels is free to play every day. You don't need an account, but signing in saves your results. A station used in Vowels won't come up again in any game for 30 days.
